ABOUT EMIRATES POLO ASSOCIATION
“The affection and care of horses is part of our cultural heritage from which we have taken inspiration to create an environment that upholds our traditional values”
– Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan
Renowned for their beauty, loyalty, strength and intelligence, the Arabian horse is as much a part of Arab tradition as the camel or falcon. The love and respect for these fine creatures, and their descendants, has been evident first from the very formation of the United Arab Emirates.
His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late ruler of the UAE established Ghantoot Polo Club in 1994 as the only Royal facility in the UAE. Today the patron of the Ghantoot Polo Team, his son His Highness Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, continues his legacy through his love of the sport.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, has long been captivated by the sheer power, elegance, speed and grace of horses and is heavily involved in many equestrian sports.
The UAE’s first polo club dates back to 1974, and today there are four active polo clubs between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai – Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, Desert Palm Polo Club, Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club and Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.
Based 40 minutes from central Abu Dhabi, close to the borders of Dubai, sits Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club founded in 1994. It hosts several tournaments during the season including Pink Polo (in support of Breast Cancer), British Polo Day Abu Dhabi, Emirates Polo Open and the UAE President Polo Cup. Ghantoot also has a breeding facility for polo ponies as well as purebred Arabian horses.
Based in Dubai since 1994, Desert Palm, owned and ran by Ali Albwardy, is twenty minutes away from Downtown Dubai. Each year, the club hosts medium to high goal tournaments including the Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge. Desert Palm is also home to the Dubai Polo Team.
Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club is owned and run by Emaar Properties, and its stables contain 150 polo ponies. The major polo tournament hosted by the club is the La Martina Opening Cup, played during November.
The Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club opened its doors in October 2016. An equestrian haven, boasting some of the best facilities in the UAE. The club has 520 stables, five horse walkers and two exercise tracks. The club is also the new and permanent home of the Dubai Polo Silver and Gold Cup Series, which consists of five tournaments.
